The situation in Ireland deteriorated rapidly during the course of 1913 and 1914.

  • January 1913 - The Ulster Volunteer Force is formed to resist Home Rule
  • November 1913 - The Irish Volunteers are formed
  • March 1914 - British Army Officers at the Curragh Barracks near Dublin announce they will not fight Unionists is Ulster if called to do so
  • April 1914 - Gun running at Larne
  • May 1914 - final reading of the Home Rule Bill in Parliament
  • June 1914 - Gun running at Howth
  • July 1914 - British Government introduce an amending bill to exclude Ulster from
    Home Rule
  • 21-24 July 1914 - Buckingham Palace Conference to resolve the conflict fails
