The Young Family

John Young along with his sons Willy and George were fervent Unionists. They owned Galgorm Castle. The Young Family owned the Braid Water Spinning Mill which was the largest employer in Ballymena

Willy and George helped in the organisation and revival of the Ballymena Unionist Clubs. The family were also involved in the formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), set up to resist Home Rule. The Youngs helped bank roll the UVF, buying arms, uniforms and equipment. George Young “commanded” Ballymena and nine other UVF districts.
